Acne that causes blockages deep under the surface of the skin - in the sebaceous glands - is an example of the more acute forms of acne. When the sebaceous glands are blocked, they produce large, unsightly bumps and lumps on several areas, namely the face, upper chest, and back areas. One of the reasons these blockages form is the presence of dead skin cells. A common way to get rid of the dead skin cells that can cause this problem is to have your skin exfoliated. But, it's not guaranteed that this will help your problem. Plus, it is known that there is a genetic tendency toward acne for some families, at least, but not for everybody. As a rule, if acne doesn't run in your family, but you have it anyway, you could probably benefit by exfoliation. Still, one note of caution in order to keep from causing skin damage is to avoid exfoliating your skin frequently. There is also a good reason behind the warning not to squeeze your pimples. If you are tempted to just inadvertently squeeze your blemishes, you could cause scarring. And when you have a scar, your skin has been damaged. It is especially undesired to squeeze so much that it bleeds. That is almost inviting certain scarring or enlarged pores at the least. When you find a pimple that is not deeply embedded in your skin, it's not a problem if you want to squeeze it, but you must be gentle. First, soften the blemish by applying warm - not hot - water to the area with a washcloth. When the skin is warmed up a bit, gently squeeze the pimple. Don't make the mistake of thinking it's best to squeeze until there is nothing left in the pimple, because this aggressive squeezing can lead to skin damage. Besides the possibility of physical scarring, acne is also responsible for other types of scars. As an example, a lot of negative emotions can surface in someone with acne and one of the most prevalent is a feeling of humiliation. Teen-agers can be especially cruel and tease another teen who has acne. This just makes matters worse. Other associated emotions are decreased self esteem which can trigger other problems. There has even been a study that concluded a higher likelihood for depression and even possibly suicide with the acne sufferer. The most appropriate time to begin treating acne for the best results is immediately when you suspect you have it. A visit to your dermatologist can usually stop acne in its tracks. The best way to take care of your skin is to use a very gentle cleanser and something to exfoliate dead skin on the surface. Doing this will help you prevent blockage of your pores when the dead skin cells mix with sebum or oil in your skin. Always remember that moderation is the general rule of law to maintaining clear skin on a regular basis. Never over-wash, scrub too hard or use a lot of exfoliating product. You can damage your skin and not really know it with improper skin care. The regimen that you set up to take care of your skin will either help it or hurt it in the long run. Acne, as you can easily tell, is not an easy thing to diagnose or to figure out. Regardless of this difficulty, you must have some idea of the cause before you can utilize a treatment that will be effective. |
